VALERIAN (VALERIANA OFFICINALIS)

This is a beautiful herbaceous plant that is frequently found in France in meadows and damp areas. Valerian has a fibrous root and very fragrant pink flowers that bloom from April to August. The very characteristic scent of the root is surprisingly attractive to cats, who like to rub it with delight, which explains its nickname “catnip”.

Valerian was already used in ancient times for its sedative and relaxing properties. Pliny the Elder already mentioned it in his works. It was not until the 16th century that it was recognised as having the properties for which it is now famous. Valerian root has a strong odour due to the presence of an essential oil. Valerian is traditionally used to reduce nervousness in adults, particularly in the case of minor sleep disorders.
